Place of Refuge for Distressed Ships

Abstract

When a ship gets into trouble, the master of the ship and ship owner faces many challenges regarding the requirement of a sheltered area for preventing marine pollution and further damage to the vessel. To reach a solution is very difficult in this regard. Protecting the interest of the Coastal State and the ships seeking refuge are a controversial issue.To enter into the coastal waters is decided by the State itself, so granting and denying the refuge depends upon the decisions made by the coastal authorities. This article tries to discuss the questions related to the issue of the place of refuge in the contemporary era.
