Prevalence of depression in patients admitted to general surgery wards: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract

Background and aim: the purpose of present study was evaluate Prevalence of depression in patients admitted to general surgery wards.

Method: all articles published in international databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Embase until March 2022 included. Google Scholar search engine was used; Data analysis was performed using STATA.V16 software.

Result: In the initial search, 1218 studies were identified; full text of 158 articles was reviewed; finally nine articles entered the analysis. Prevalence of Depression in patients admitted to general surgery wards was 13% (Effect size (ES), 95% CI, 9%-16%).

Conclusion: Due to the moderate to high prevalence of depression in patients admitted to general surgery wards, planning for its systematic management should be done.
