A Study on Educational Aspirations of Higher Secondary Students with Special Reference to Demographic Variables

The present study has attempted to explore the educational aspirations of higher secondary students with special reference to demographic variables. A representative sample of 976 school students studying 11th standard were randomly selected from the government, government aided and private higher secondary schools located in the rural and urban areas of Salem district. Tools for collecting the data include Educational Aspiration Scale developed by the investigator. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, percentage analysis and differential statistics. The findings of the study revealed that male and female higher secondary students do differ in the dimension of personal factor and total score of educational aspirations. The male and female higher secondary students do not differ in the dimension of environmental factor of educational aspirations. The results also revealed that the locality, types of management, nature of school, types of family and the medium of instruction of higher secondary students do differ in the dimensions of personal factors, environmental factors and the total score of educational aspirations. The higher secondary students of Science and Arts group do not differ in the dimensions of personal factors and total score of educational aspirations, but they do differ in the dimension of environmental factors of educational aspirations.
