Aspects of Using Music in EFL Classroom

Abstract

            The study explores the relevant literature regarding the use of music in EFL classrooms to find out the aspects, that make music important for EFL classrooms and theaspects that a teacher should keep in mind while using music in EFL classrooms. On the basis of available literature, the aspects, that make music important for EFL classrooms are Reducing Stress and Anxiety, Non-Linguistic elements, Variouslanguage skills, Motivation, Rhythm, Learning Vocabulary, Strengthening the Memory, Self-esteem, Learning different forms and dialects, Cultural Awareness, Development of Linguistic Memory, Sense of Rhythm, Intonation. On the other hand, as the available literature suggests the aspects that a teacher should keep in mind while using music in EFL classrooms are Clarity of the Lyrics, Difficulty Level, Interest of the student, Suitability, Songs Sung by Native Speakers, Discussion, Teaching the correct pronunciation, Focusing on Grammar, Choice of songs, Using Karaoke. All the aspects mentioned above are explained in detail in this study with special references from the available literature. By analyzing the relevant literature to find out some generalized aspects regarding the area of study this research has listed some research gaps in the conclusion part to be filled up by future researchers. Those are (i)The previous studies rarely used any pre-established approaches of English Language Teaching while planning the experiments. (ii)Not all the studies include practical experiments and if the experiment is done the rate of development is not recorded in all the studies.(iii)No research until now is found where it is mentioned that the samples can read and write in English but are not capable of Communication for example Listening and Speaking.
