Occurrence and Mortality rate among woman's with Breast Cancer in Iraq 2017-2018: Epidemiological study

Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in females in Iraq and the world continues to be one of the main causes of cancer-related death. The prevalence of breast cancer in females is rising. The mortality rate by breast cancer can be reduced by regular breast cancer screening program for early detection and prevention.

Aims: To determine the occurrence and mortality among women with breast cancer in Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf city.  

Method: A descriptive study (epidemiological study: occurrence and mortality rate) was performed to determine the occurrence and Mortality rate among women with Breast Cancer. The study was carried out in Al Sadr medical city and Middle Euphrates Cancer Center on Al Najaf Al -Ashraf city during the period from January 11, 2019 to July 12 2019. A Non-Probability "purposive" sample of (413) patients with breast cancer were selected based on criteria of female only in sample study and 2017 and 2018 years only.

Results: Data were collected by patient's records to identify the prevalence and mortality. The Data was analysis through using mean, Standard Deviation, frequency, and percentage. The study findings that the highest age group of samples was ranging from (46 – 60) have 47.1%. Majority prevalence the patients related to side of breast cancer its right side, Most of the prevalence and mortality of breast cancer on 2017 more than 2018.

Conclusions: The study concluded that: The majority of the patients were those with age (46-60) years. Most of the occurrences rate are Patients from urban residential area, married and illiterate. These demographic data elevate from occurrence and mortality rate. Most patients' occurrence and mortality who are occupation is housewife for among women with breast cancer this factor decrease from seeking health care services.

 Recommendations: Increased health awareness and early treatment have led to a reduction in prevalence and mortality. Therefore, we recommend focusing on raising community health awareness for prevention and early detection of disease, raising the level of preventive awareness of the community to avoid risk factors such as obesity. The development of health programs for early detection and prevention of the spread of breast cancer, especially in the urban, extensive study on the prevalence and mortality of breast cancer throughout the country.
