Lived Experiences of Stakeholders during the New Normal: A Phenomenology

The country’s educational system shifts to distance learning modality due to the threats of COVID 19 pandemic. Sultan Kudarat State University as one of the State Universities in Philippines embraced the flexible learning modality. With this paradigm shift, this study aimed determine the lived experiences of teachers, students, and parents, both their challenges and opportunities during the new normal education, as a basis for policy recommendations. This study utilized the Phenomenological Research Method with the use of in-depth interview as instrument. Common themes in terms of challenges among the teachers and students are the difficulty of adjustment, weak internet connectivity, and challenging New Version of LMS. Common themes among students and parents include financial constraints, while poor digital skills are common to parents. The difficulty of output retrieval, less confidence in terms of reliability of assessment, the feeling of personal guilt, and overloaded works are unique themes among teachers. Among the parents, uncertainties for the safety of their children, less awareness of the University policy, and lack of knowledge about the lessons are considered unique struggles in them. In terms of opportunities, students and teachers share common themes such as being more innovative and resourceful and improving digital and time management skills. Financial management is a common theme as an opportunity for both parents and students. The teachers are becoming more lenient and accessing continuing professional education virtually. On the other hand, enhancing independent learning is a unique students' experience. The close monitoring of the children at home and how children assist their parents’ work are amazing experiences among parents.
